How did the history of fusion style begin? What does it mean and who is it for? You can read all the characteristic features and features of the fusion style in the article on the Room Planner blog.
Fusion is one of the most interesting styles you can use for an interior. The appeal of this style of décor comes from its concept of abandoning rules. By its very nature, fusion design frees itself from what textbooks regard as ‘right’ and ‘wrong’. It doesn’t fear the unknown but embraces the possibilities of the path seldom taken.
The history of the fusion style
Fusion has always existed as an incidental concept – people have always mixed and matched objects and styles from different eras and schools of thought. However, the concrete definition of fusion style was conceived in the 1980s. It was the result of designers deliberately breaking with tradition and opting for combinations that defied categorization.
Much of the inspiration behind these ideas was the theme of being anti-establishment. Young people especially were rebelling against the norms accepted by society in every sphere of life. The results manifested themselves in every creative field from painting to music to literature and, of course, interior design.
Suddenly, everything that we were told could or should not be done was fair game. Designers leaped on fusion ideas that they would not have imagined prior to the fusion interior design movement. Random mix and match ideas became indistinguishable from fusion in design.
While there was an automatic negative reaction from the usual sources, most people saw the appeal of combining the best of many worlds. As fusion designs furniture came to the attention of an increasing number of people, its popularity expanded exponentially. Fusion style was born.
Characteristics and features
The basic concept of fusion interior can be found in its name. The word ‘fusion’ means a combination or mixing. In the context of interior design, it reflects the idea of fusing together ideas that would normally never be considered as part of a single design.
It is an approach that gives unprecedented freedom to designers. The rigid concepts of esthetics and creativity that they were taught at school no longer applied. Instead, it has been replaced by a more personal perspective on the world and our perceptions of what is ‘beautiful’.
A common misunderstanding is that fusion is the same thing as chaos, a world without any rules where every decision is taken on a whim. That is inaccurate. While this fusion home design does leave behind the strict rules that are an essential part of every other school, it does so in a deliberate and intelligent manner.
One of the most interesting doors this opens is the union of décor styles from completely different eras and parts of the world. Think tribal art from the Native American, Indian, African, and Mayan cultures sharing the same space.
Even though the ideas are disparate and have their origins in places too far apart for their original creators to ever have met, they have a commonality in basic symmetry and geometry.
The angle of fusion that an interior designer wants to adopt is limitless. It could use color as the focus with monochromatic designs and objects from all over the world. It could be a shape, for example, using circles and spheres in light fittings, carpets, sculptures, framed artwork, printed patterns, and furniture.
With fusion 360 interior design, the only limits are those imposed by the designer’s own imagination.
Fusion lighting
Lighting can play an integral role in any fusion-designed space. Modern designers have embraced this concept by using the latest developments in lighting technology and fusing it with age-old concepts of creative design.
That is why it is now possible to find massive crystal chandeliers that use LED lights. The brightness factor aside, LED bulbs also produce less heat than their incandescent counterparts. This small difference can completely change the vibe of an interior – the bright space under a chandelier is suddenly also cool enough to stay in.
Fusion lighting can also be extremely practical, combining the class and glamour of traditional styles with modern concepts that enhance the livability of a space. Elaborate wall-mounted sconce lights can be manufactured using modern materials that require little to no care and still maintain their looks and functionality.
Multi-bulb lighting can be designed to be lit in parts to save energy, or give off light in different colors as the situation demands.
Some designers use lighting to illuminate their fusion décor pieces. For example, modern lighting on a series of masks and headgear – Viking helmet, Mexican sombrero, and Russian bear hat – can bring out the best in them.
Ideas for fusion apartment design
By combining old and new materials, fusion design is also ripe for some very interesting visual ideas. Imagine what the somber deep brown of antique wood looks like juxtaposed with the glistening sheen of space-age steel. Visualize an earthy grey concrete sculpture embedded with translucent bluish resin to create a surreal landscape.
Color can be the ideal way to continue an exploration of fusion styles. You may have noticed that the traditional concepts of design usually tend to feature the same range or palette of colors. A fusion-inspired room can be created to have deliberate areas of interest that draw the eye.
These stimulating areas are balanced off by other places that allow the eye and the mind to rest. In a single room, these divergent themes unite to imbue a sense of balance visually and mentally.
Walls are a natural canvas because they offer a huge blank space on which to express ideas. One good fusion idea is to use walls as a chronology of art, with adjacent frames containing artwork from different eras.
While exploring these contrasts, why not include texture as well? Smooth finishes are preferred by some interior design styles while another features unevenness as artistic expression. Tapestries, shag carpets, and furs bring an interesting play of light and shadow into a room, too.
Seating furniture is perhaps the most practical way to elevate comfort ahead of pure concepts in fusion design. An interior with an antique divan with plush cushions, an ottoman, a space chair, and a Lazy Boy may be abhorrent to traditionalists but there is no denying that they provide a comprehensive range of the most comfortable seating.
